Getting a scholarship
A scholarship can be a great way to pay for school which is why everybody wants to get one. There are lots of them available so there is a reasonable chance that you are in fact eligible for one. As long as you know where to find them and how to apply there is a good chance that you will be able to get a scholarship.
The reason that scholarships are sought after so much is that they are basically free money for school. It does not have to be repaid so if you can get one it can significantly reduce the cost of your education. The challenge is in finding scholarships that you can apply for. Most will require that you fill out an application but there are a few that will be awarded without an application for example if you were the top student in your high school there may be a scholarship that you qualify for automatically.
The first thing that you have to keep in mind about scholarships is that you do not necessarily have to be a great student to get one. In general they are not awarded to really bad students but there are plenty that an average student can qualify for. Most scholarships are based on merit but there are some that are based on need as well. There are all sorts of different organizations that award scholarships for all sorts of different reasons so there is probably one somewhere that you are eligible for. It may however take some effort to find the ones that you are qualified for.
The best place to start looking for a scholarship is with the school that you are planning to attend. Many are school specific and in these cases the financial aid office will be able to tell you which ones are available. There are also many scholarships that you can use at any school that you would like to attend. These are the ones that can be harder to find. Fortunately there are websites that will list most if not all of the scholarships that are available. This will probably still miss some so you will likely need to do some additional digging.
When you do find scholarships that you are eligible for you should definitely go ahead and apply for them. A lot of people never apply because they worry that there are lots of better candidates and that they won't get the scholarship. Really you have nothing to lose and you never know you may actually get the scholarship. Don't go and apply for everything especially for the ones that are clearly not qualified for but if you meet the minimum requirements go ahead and apply. Every year scholarships go unused because nobody applies for them; make sure that you don't miss an opportunity because you were afraid to apply.
