Do You Need a Student Loan?

Over the last few years the cost of college has gone up dramatically. In all likelihood it will go up even further in the future. The result is that most students need help with paying for college; usually the way that they do it is by using a student loan.

Whether or not you need a student loan is obviously going to depend in large part on your personal situation. That being said most people will need some sort of financial assistance. There are several different options available that you can use if you do need a student loan, in fact many people will use more than one source to pay for school. The first place that you are going to want to look for a loan is from the government. The loans that they offer are called Stafford loans and almost everybody qualifies for one. Stafford loans have a very low interest rate but the amount that you can borrow is capped.

The next source that you are going to want to look at is the loans that are offered by the banks but which are subsidized by the government. These loans have interest rates that are set by the government and which are fairly low. Again the amount that you can borrow is capped but unless you are attending a very expensive school the combination of Stafford loans and subsidized loans should be enough to cover all of your school expenses.

If you are going to an expensive school or if you are one of the small group of people who are not eligible for the government programs you are going to have to take an unsubsidized loan from a bank. This is where things get tricky since the rates and terms can vary so dramatically. Part of the problem is that there is no way for the bank to properly assess how much risk you represent because most students have a very limited credit history. This is why there is such a huge variation from one bank to another when it comes to the cost of student loans. You are going to want to shop around to make sure that you are getting the best deal.

Something that is becoming a bit of an issue with student loans is people borrowing too much. Because it is so easy to get them a lot of people are borrowing more than they need and spending it on things that are not actually necessary for their education. This may seem like a good idea at the time but you will regret it when the time comes to pay off the loan. A student loan should really only be used for tuition, books, rent and food. If you are using it for anything else you have borrowed too much money.
